Rain kill more than 50 people in South Africa

Floods and landslides caused by recent rainfall in southern Africa, have caused many people to lose their lives, authorities said Wednesday this week.

Rescue activities continue to search for survivors and bodies of victims in the fallen areas of the KwaZulu-Natal coast, where the number of deaths has increased to 51, officials in the area have said.

The heavy rain falls in the area for several days. On Monday, officials suspended their visit to the KwaZulu-Natal area due to road degradation, Lennox Mabaso, a regional government spokesman said.

Many people have fallen into houses, while several roads are destroyed by flooding, especially in Durban and its suburbs.

Three people have also lost their lives following floods in the Eastern Cape province, according to the SADC state news agency.

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office said the president is expecting to visit two regions affected by the rains.
